I hate to say I told you so, but I did tell you so earlier this morning.
Here’s an excerpt from a story at CNN, headlined, “Haley seeks to clarify Civil War comments as backlash mounts”:
Berlin, New HampshireCNN —
Nikki Haley on Thursday sought to clarify her comments about the Civil War one day after a voter in New Hampshire called her out for not mentioning slavery as a cause of the war.
“I mean, of course the Civil War was about slavery,” Haley told radio host Jack Heath Thursday morning.
“But what’s the lesson in all of that?” she continued. “That we need to make sure that every person has freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do and be anything they want to be without anyone or government getting in the way. That was the goal of what that was at. Yes, I know it was about slavery. I’m from the South, of course I know it’s about slavery.”
[End]
Ok, so, it was about slavery. So, why not just say so outright when you were caught off-guard by the question?
The answer is clear: Because she knows that idea is not popular in South Carolina, and SC is a key primary state.
This isn’t hard.
By the way, some readers have pointed out that I failed to note that Haley did lead an effort to remove the confederate battle flag from the state’s capitol. That is true. What is equally true is that she adamantly refused to do that during her first term in office, taking action only after she was safely re-elected to a second term, and tragically after a killer carrying a confederate flag killed 9 members of a Black church in Charleston.
This story at Time provides all the details.
Please stop trying to defend this awful person to me. Thanks.
That is all.
No fan of Haley but to say the “Civil War” (which it was not) was “ all about slavery” is incredibly simplistic. To the first point, a “civil war” denotes two factions fighting over who is going to be dominant of a country. This was not the case; the Southern states sought to secede from the Union & form their own confederation. Under The Articles of Confederation they had this right. AL decided they didn’t & opted to force them back in the Union @ the point of a bayonet. In reality it was a “War Between The States” or - as some call it - “The War of Northern Aggression” since AL mobilized the Federal Army & sent it South to “kill people & break things” as Rush used to say. Moreover, outside of the abolitionists like John Brown, you couldn’t find a white man willing to lay down his life for a black man. AL sold the war as a way to “preserve the Union” & stated unequivocally “my primary issue is to save the Union. If I save it by freeing all of the slaves I would do that. If I could save it by freeing none of the slaves I would do that and if I could save it by freeing some & leaving others alone I would also do that.” The only reason the Emancipation Proclamation was released after the Battle of Antietam was to forestall British & French intervention in the war on the side of the South. AL’s framing of the conflict in those terms was nothing short of a political master stroke. Both countries had abolished slavery much earlier & were suddenly faced with going to war to preserve it.
There was also a huge issue of tariffs on Southern ports that Al didn’t want to lose. Republicans/conservatives have to stop holding up AL as “our greatest president”. He was horrible, he usurped the powers of the state, waged an illegal, undeclared war & helped created the federal govt behemoth oppressing us today. His methods were later utilized by outside-The Constitution-regimes of Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Obama, & Biden. Moreover he suspended The Writ of Habeus Corpus; what imbecile holds up someone like that to emulate? You want a better example of an excellent conservative president? Look up Calvin Coolidge.
This isn’t about any “Lost Cause” BS; the Democrat party - the party of the old South - attempted to take themselves out of the Union & AL should’ve let them go. They held blacks on plantations back then & LBJ manipulated them back onto the Federal plantation since 1965.
How’s it worked out for them?
She started the woke "remove all of our history, good and bad" crap. She is weak and looked for rhe easiest way to appease, rather than take a strong leadership stance.
IMO she is part of the reason we have so many issues. Had she shown true leadership, many wouldn't feel so emboldened now.
While the murders at the church were horrific...they happened "today" not 160+ years ago. The Civil War was complicated and NOT just about slavery... without unbiased/slanted education of those difficult times in our nation's history, we are likely to repeat it (or something similar). 🥺
