**UPDATE** Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has ordered a full audit to be performed of the House proceedings that led up to this scam impeachment. Cool. Payback for this stain on our state should be pure, unadulterated hell on those who carried it out.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted on all counts Saturday by the Texas Senate after deliberations over the sham of a case inexplicably lasted overnight. Two Republican senators, Robert Nichols and Kelly Hancock, voted to convict along with the Senate’s 9 Democrats. Those votes can only be explained as pure pettiness since the prosecution miserably failed to prove a single allegation levied against Paxton by bitter ex-employees.
Here’s an excerpt from a story at NBC:
Impeached Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton was acquitted on 16 impeachment articles on Saturday, thwarting an effort to remove him from office over allegations of corruption.
His acquittal follows a two-week trial and a day of deliberations. Paxton was impeached in the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives in May by an overwhelming vote.
Paxton rose to prominence as a top legal adversary of former President Barack Obama's administration, and later as a key ally of former President Donald Trump's administration. Lawsuits to overturn the Affordable Care Act, legal protections of young undocumented immigrants, and the results of the 2020 election made him a popular force for the right, even after he was indicted on securities fraud charges in 2015.
But his political support fractured this year when the state House impeached him over allegations of abuse of office and bribery.
While House Republicans enjoyed an element of surprise — the investigation into Paxton was largely done in secret before House leaders went public and quickly moved for a vote — the senators faced months of political pressure leading up to the trial.
Paxton allies promised that Republicans who voted against the attorney general would see well-funded primary challengers, while Trump made it clear he was backing Paxton.
[End]
Every House Republican who voted to impeach Paxton on such flimsy charges that in the end were shown to be utterly baseless would resign in disgrace if they had a shred of personal integrity.
All of those Republicans, along with Nichols and Hancock, should be mercilessly hounded out of office in their coming re-election bids. What an absolute disgrace.
Every Texan owes a huge debt of gratitude to Paxton’s lead defense attorney, Tony Buzbee, a mangy bulldog of a defense lawyer who shredded every prosecution witness and every element of the prosecution’s case.
God Bless Texas.
That is all.
A W E S O M E !
