After the conclusion of the final night of the Republican National Convention, this year’s election is President Donald Trump’s to lose. Unfortunately, he represents a political party that has in recent cycles turned losing elections despite the table being set for it to win into an art form.
CNN’s talking head Van Jones, a former Obama advisor, captured the mood of the GOP this week best when he told his shocked panel mates, “We haven’t been at a convention that felt like this since the Obama convention in 2008.”
The energy was certainly there, all right, and odd appearances like those of Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock not only raised the energy levels, but created moments everyone will remember, for better or worse. Honestly, I thought subbing those two with speeches by Ivanka Trump and a potentially unifying figure who could attract more undecided voters like Tulsi Gabbard would have been a better touch, but hey, it was Trump’s night and Trump wanted the Hulk and the Kid. So, there we go.
