Listening to the 2-Way podcast live event last night, Mark Halperin expressed doubt that Donald Trump is intent on following through with the tariffs announced Saturday. Both Halperin and the partisan Democrat who hosts the show, Dan Turrentine, said they believe the tariffs are just for show and most likely will either not go into effect as scheduled on Tuesday, or will only be in effect for days or maybe a few weeks.
Their belief is that Trump will be eager to lift the tariffs as soon as any of the three target governments - Canada, Mexico, and China - tosses him the tiniest of bones to hang his hat on for declaring victory.
That is wrong, in my view. This is one of Trump’s main planks from the campaign: Using tariffs combined with beefed up border security to halt the flow of fentanyl into our country.
That includes Canada, whose government Trump lashed out at again Sunday evening in a post on Truth Social:
