Friday's Absurdity of the Day: What Happened to the Left's Love Affair With Elon Musk and Tesla?
Sock Puppet Biden was in Detroit Wednesday, touring a General Motors plant where that company’s line of electric vehicles is supposedly manufactured. As part of the speech he read from his TelePrompter, the Sock Puppet gave GM CEO Mary Barra full credit for “leading the way” for electric vehicles in America, saying she “changed the world.”
No, he really said it. Check it out:
But, when one attendee went through the GM exhibit at the recent LA Auto Show to view all of those revolutionary EVs that Mary Barra is supposedly making to change the world, here is what he found:
Not a one. Just a bunch of pretty new GM cars and SUVs that run on gasoline and diesel, like 99% of the rest of the vehicles on the road in America today.
The truth is that there has been no “electric vehicle revolution” as ol’ mush mouth claimed. The truth is that GM is not going to convert its entire fleet to EVs by 2035 or anything close to it unless Mary Barra wants to end up having a gigantic corporate bankruptcy on her record. The truth is that car makers are likely to sell somewhere between 4 an 5 million EVs globally in 2021, a tiny fraction of global car sales. They will occupy a larger fraction in 2035, but still a fraction.
But be that as it may, the old weirdo’s semi-lucid script reading made me wonder what ever happened to the left’s love affair with Elon Musk and Tesla? Because, if any single person and company has revolutionized the EV industry in America and around the world, it is Musk and Tesla.
Musk was the darling of the Democrat Party and its demented propaganda agents in the corrupt news media for years, but that has all changed in more recent times. The question is why? Is it because he refused to join in with the woke nitwit crowd on Twitter bashing Trump? Is it because he went on Joe Rogan’s podcast and basically agreed with the host on pretty much everything? Is it because he regularly makes a fool of the old commie Bernie Sanders? Is it because of his move of much of Tesla’s operations and all of SpaceX’s operations out of California to the red state of Texas?
Well, it is likely all of those things played a role in the left’s disaffection with Musk and his company. But I think the main reason why Musk and Tesla have lost the love of the left is something much more fundamental to the leftist mindset.
Tesla was founded in 2003 and made its initial public offering in 2010. Over the first 17 years of its existence, the company was not a profitable enterprise, and Musk became one of history’s most famous rent seekers. Without the largesse lavished upon his company in the form of tax breaks and direct subsidies and indirect subsidies by state and federal governments to Tesla buyers, Tesla could not have lasted in business for more than a few years before its initial investors would have thrown up their hands and moved on to an actual profitable enterprise.
Tesla was, in fact, America’s biggest corporate ward of the state for many years. But that all changed in 2020, the first year that Musk could brag that his car company actually turned an annual profit. Granted, Tesla is still heavily-reliant on state and federal subsidies, but always before 2020 the company had reported a net loss to the SEC. But in 2020, it was finally in the black.
You have to understand that, in the minds of the woke nitwit outrage crowd on Twitter and the leaders of the Democrat Party, corporations are evil as a class. Corporate entities are exemplars of free enterprise, and even worse, of capitalism, which is the devil in the leftist religion. And trust me, leftism is indeed a religion.
The only good corporations in the minds of the left are corporations who rely on government subsidies and other support to survive. Thus the cultist love affair between the left and wind power, solar power and EVs. So long as Musk’s main public presence was that of a clever CEO successfully convincing the feds and state governments to prop up his unprofitable company, he was celebrated as a folk hero by the left.
But those days are over now. Not only is Tesla now a semi-profitable enterprise - and thus evil by definition in the religious dogma of the left - Musk also now has produced the world’s most successful non-government space exploration company to boot.
All of these things - the profitability of Tesla, the success of SpaceX, the association with the un-vaccinated Joe Rogan, the move from a failing blue state to a successful red state, the reluctance to bash Trump and the hilarious public pinging of the Commie - have combined to make Elon Musk a heretic in the religion of the left. And Musk’s status as a heretic demands that his companies, Tesla and SpaceX, must never be celebrated and in fact must be shunned by the left.
So it is now that we see the spectacle of the Sock Puppet reading a script that says that Mary Barra and General Motors - not Musk and Tesla - have created a “revolution” in EVs, despite the fact that the company doesn’t even bother to put a single one of them on display at the nation’s largest car show.
Somewhere, Elon Musk, who recently held the status of the world’s richest man, is laughing his ass off at these circus clowns of the left.
That is all.
I hope Mr. Musk decides to start sticking it to the demoncrats plenty hard.
He's got boat loads of money to do it with. I know I would if I were in his shoes.
