I came to realize Donald Trump would likely win the 2016 election in August, 2015, after watching him wipe the floor with 17 competitors for the GOP nomination in a debate that month. I told my wife then that the reason he would win is because he was the only person on that stage that night who 1) directly answered the questions being asked, and 2) invariably says what he is really thinking.
The American public in 2015 was clamoring for a little honesty in the political realm, someone real who spoke clearly to them after the previous 27 years of enduring talking-points parroters like George HW Bush, Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Hussein Obama His Own Self, not to mention all the failed talking points monkeys like John McCain, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, John Kerry, and Al Gore.
I turned out to be right back then, and The Five’s Greg Gutfeld was right about it all this week in a 2:34 monologue in which he deftly explains Trump’s true appeal to American voters. Below is the video clip of that dialogue, followed by a transcript for those who prefer to read.
