"How Can They Do This?"
“How can they do this?” a friend asked me yesterday. “How can this prosecutor just go after his political enemies like this, and nothing happens to him?”
The answer, of course, is simple. He can do this because there is no political price to be paid for doing it. And there’s no political price to be paid for doing it because our country doesn’t have a free and functioning press establishment.
It’s the same reason why Hitler and Lenin and Stalin and Mao were able to do what they did in Germany, Russia and China during the 20th century. The only difference is that the press in those countries either never was really free in any way - as was the case in Russia and China - or was infiltrated and corrupted by the state, as was the case in Germany.
The process in the United States has been somewhat similar to what happened in Germany during the 1920s and 1930s, with the CIA’s Operation Mockingbird and subsequent efforts to infiltrate the media. But by and large, the reality in the U.S. has been that the profession of journalism has corrupted itself, starting in the nation’s journalism schools. America’s universities have now cranked out three generations of graduates who have been utterly immersed in leftist doctrine, literally brainwashed by Marxist and Alinskyite professors that it is not their duty to accurately inform the public and hold the feet of the powerful to the fire, but to brainwash the public and do what the powerful on the political left tell them to do.
