"Are you and the Biden administration taking preventative steps in case [a recession] happens?" Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm: "Oh, for sure. The president is really focused on preventing these inflationary increases."

Transcript:

“Oh, for sure. I mean, the president is really focused on preventing these inflationary increases to the extent he can. Inflation is obviously happening globally, a recession is not inevitable, the president really wants to have a steady and stable recovery. But of course, one of the biggest pieces of these inflationary increases that we’re seeing is the price of fuel.”

So, as a former talking points monkey myself, let me break this classic scripted talking point’s key elements down for you:

  • Start with a declarative, positive statement of good intentions: “the president is really focused on preventing these inflationary pressures…”. This one is important, because it sets the tone. The president is ‘focused,’ and that supposedly can only mean great things are coming even though we all surely understand by now that this particular nominal president has the attention span of the average June Bug.
