In a rare interesting and even kind of balanced report published in the NYTimes Wednesday, Jonathan Swan and Theodore Schleifer credit Vice President J.D. Vance and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles with helping to broker what has developed thus far into an uneasy truce between Elon Musk and President Donald Trump.
The report is based on “three people briefed on the call” which Musk placed to Trump Monday evening in an opening effort to find a way to gracefully pull back from the unbelievably embarrassing position he had placed himself following his childish exchange of taunts with the POTUS last Thursday.
The initial opening gambit came Friday afternoon, when Musk spoke with Vance and Wiles to elicit their advice on the way back into Trump’s graces. Musk has much to lose should his relationship turn permanently sour with the President given the many contracts his various companies have with the federal government and the tax breaks and incentives from which they benefit.
