After conducting a Twitter poll in which well over 15 million votes were cast by humans and bots of all political stripes, Elon Musk announced Saturday evening that former president Donald Trump’s account - banned on January 8, 2021 - will be reinstated after a 22-month hiatus.
The ex-president now joins luminaries like the Babylon Bee, LibsofTikTok and Kathie Griffin in having his posting privileges reinstated after a long ban from the platform. Whether Trump will actually use those privileges remains an open question, since he has promised users at his own “Truth Social” platform that he would remain there and had no interest in going back to Twitter.
“Truth Social is special,” y’all!
Of course, Trump’s impulsive nature most likely dictates that that promise and $3.00 will get you a small cup of coffee at your local Starbucks. I’ll give it maybe until Tuesday before he will lose all capacity to resist a triumphant return to his favorite social media addiction.
The man craves attention, positive or negative, and he only gets positive attention at the Truth Social echo chamber. On Twitter, where he had more followers than any other user prior to his banning, he can receive every form of attention known to mankind. So, he’ll be back, sucking all the air from the room as always.
