While we are gathering ideas for rolling back regulations (both to reduce cost and spur economy & domestic manufacturing ): why don’t we put mpg and NOx regulations back to where they provided “clean air, clean water, etc”?

Mid 90’s mpg regulations and maybe 80’s for NOx regulations due to diminishing returns (single digit % improvements on mpg and NOx only from baseline), large impacts to design (cars are now bigger, especially trucks to get around regulation, less reliability with additional complexity), and cost (for discussion, let’s say they have added ~5 to 7k per light duty vehicle).

Let’s roll back the regulations for any vehicle produced entirely in USA - think of who would love a factory non-DEF, non-EGR diesel truck for example. The manufacturing boom would be huge and the vehicles would cost less, weigh less, less maintenance, and higher reliability.

Honestly, haven’t you noticed the USA “smog cities” disappeared decades ago? Have you noticed you still get the same mpg on the new car that you had on the old one? Geo metro is still the 90’s mpg king. Have you noticed how manufacturers just design trucks bigger and bigger so they meet the regulations of emissions that are determined on footprint of the vehicle? All manufacturers need to do is stretch the wheelbase (as many have done), and widen (many have done) - regulators are happy, and you pay for all the new complicated equipment that will give you problems in just a few years.
