Thursday's Trail of Absurdities: Party Boy BoJo is Out, and Few Will Miss Him
Welp, it’s actually kind of a slow news day in the United States, the slowest I can remember in several years, frankly.
So, I suppose it was inevitable that this would be happening:
Here’s an excerpt from that story at AP:
Bernard Jenkin, a senior Conservative Party lawmaker, said he met with Johnson on Wednesday and advised him to stand down.
“I just said to him, ’Look, it’s just when you go now, and it’s how you go. You can go with some dignity or you can be forced out like Donald Trump, clinging to power and pretending he’s won the election when he’s lost,” Jenkin told the BBC before Johnson agreed to resign.
Johnson, 58, managed to remain in power for almost three years, despite allegations that he was too close to party donors, that he protected supporters from bullying and corruption allegations, and that he misled Parliament and was dishonest to the public about government office parties that broke pandemic lockdown rules.
But recent disclosures that Johnson knew about sexual misconduct allegations against Chris Pincher, a Conservative lawmaker, before he promoted Pincher to a senior position turned out to be the last straw.
Last week, Pincher resigned as deputy chief whip after complaints he groped two men at a private club. That triggered a series of reports about past allegations leveled against Pincher — and shifting explanations from the government about what Johnson knew when he tapped him for a senior job enforcing party discipline.
Think about it: The Prime Minister of Great Britain is resigning because he:
Held maskless parties during COVID lockdowns he had ordered; and
Knew about one of his appointees’ sexual misconduct before appointing him.
My goodness, if that was enough to get a U.S. politician to resign, it would have taken out every Democrat governor in the entire country in 2020-21. Here are just a couple of shining examples:
But Britain is a different place, and Johnson is a conservative leader, not a liberal one. Thus, BoJo will be out the door to 115 Downing Street today, and no one will miss him much, frankly. He’s never been much of a real leader, and certainly not much of a conservative.
Let’s move on…
We’ve talked a lot about the disastrous ratings collapse at CNN since Donald J. Trump was forced out of office in early 2020, but another big ratings collapse is going on over at MSNBC now as Old Joe Biden’s ratings collapse.
Goofy conspiracy theorist Rachel Maddow saw the handwriting on the wall and jumped ship back in April, first cutting back to one day per week, and then jumping off entirely. Many had assumed, given the coincidental timing, that former White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki would jump right into that prime time slot, but she apparently wasn’t ready for the job.
As a result of that and the blessed general liberal malaise being caused by their disastrous nominal president, MSNBC’s prime time ratings are in the process of going the CNN route.
Nowhere has this overall decline hit harder than at the door of one Joy Ann Reid, host of “The Reid Out.”
It turns out that Reid’s mean-spirited, overtly racist show is losing its cachet among depressed Democrats. Here’s an excerpt from the story at Fox News:
MSNBC’s "The ReidOut" with host Joy Reid finished the second quarter of 2022 with its smallest audience since the program launched two years ago this month.
The quarter wrapped up before the long holiday weekend, revealing Reid’s program has shed viewers at an alarming rate since she took the place of Chris Matthews, who was forced to retire in March 2020.
Reid’s program averaged 1.1 million total viewers during the second quarter for its worst turnout since it launched. MSNBC’s 7 p.m. ET program also struggled among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25 to 54, averaging only 122,000 for its lowest quarterly total ever.
Yikes. Just 122,000 viewers in the 25-54 demographic. That is CNN captive airport audience territory, folks.
Speaking of the Sock Puppet’s cratering administration, the head of his communications office, Kate Bedingfield, is jumping off the sinking ship:
Honestly, in any other presidential administration, Bedingfield would have been shown the door long ago, given that she has presided over perhaps the most disastrously awful messaging effort in White House history. This past weekend provided this example of the kind of incompetence over which she has presided:
Don’t see what’s wrong? Check out the spelling of “Lousiana” - see anything missing? Yeah, so did everyone else, except for the advance team sent to New Orleans to iron out all the details for this particular vice presidential appearance. Yeah, you can excuse Bedingfield because it was, after all, Harris’s team that very predictably can’t spell, but Harris’s team is a subset of the White House department over which Bedingfield has presided for the last 18 months.
But of course, in this administration with the lame, the halt and the utterly incompetent, she was a shining star of comparative excellence in her job. On Bedingfield’s defense, it’s pretty hard to defend any president whose public approval rating seems destined to approach the level of Clayton Kershaw’s career ERA, which currently sits at 2.57.
In a statement, the White House communications office that Bedingfield runs couched her departure in the mildest terms possible:
Kate Bedingfield, a longtime trusted aide to President Biden and a senior strategist both in the administration and on his winning campaign, will leave the White House in late July to spend more time with her husband and young children after more than 3 straight years of leading his communications team.
“spend more time with her husband and young children” is basically talking points monkey speak for “she’s going anywhere but here.”
And honestly, who can blame her? I mean, isn’t it a feeling we all are having about Biden’s America?
That is all.
