Washington Update

July 14, 2023

We know you get a dozen different updates on the industry every week so we try to point out things that you may have missed, this week is no exception to that.

BLM’s Proposed Conservation Rule: Not content that only two percent of federal lands are leased for oil and gas – the Administration and wants further reductions in access to federal oil and gas assets:

Recently the Biden administration proposed some radical changes to regulations implementing FLPMA (the Federal Land Policy Act of 1976) and the doctrine which says public lands should be used for multiple uses.

The new proposed regulations allow for conservation leases on federal lands in addition to oil and gas leases, coal leases, grazing leases, etc. If someone knows nothing about how federal lands are managed (Congress, media, people from Connecticut, et al) this doesn’t sound too bad — after all who could object to conserving federal lands?
