Still No Speaker, EVs Costs Are Not Getting Any Cheaper

October 24, 2023

Speaker of the House Update

There is no real update. Rep. Scalise didn’t get enough votes. Rep. Jordan didn’t get enough votes. There is no clear path forward. Good thing the world is all at peace…

The Biden administration’s latest assault on cars and trucks people want to drive

This week the comment period for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s CAFE standards for passenger cars and light trucks for model year 2027-2032 closed. These regulations are a de facto mandate for electric vehicles.

NHTSA calls for the average fleet fuel economy to be 135.8 grams of CO2/mile by 2032 (the lower the better). However, today the Toyota Prius emits 155 grams of CO2/mile. In regular terms  people the Prius gets 57 mpg and NHTSA’s regulation is calling for fleet-wide (i.e., cars and light duty trucks) efficiency that is 12% better than today’s Prius. This is incredibly unrealistic and almost certainly illegal.
