Wednesday's Woeful Absurdities: Why The Debt Ceiling is the Wrong Fight for the GOP to Pick
A very wise lobbyist named Dan once taught me that one of the most important keys to winning in politics is knowing when and where to pick your battles. One reason the GOP has always struggled to win and maintain congressional majorities is a chronic inability to adhere to this seemingly simple principle.
I’m gonna tell y’all right now that this is not the fight to pick:
For the Republicans, the debt ceiling has never been the right fight. Raising the federal debt ceiling to a level needed to fund the spending and debts congress has already approved is simply an exercise in informing the world that the U.S. is not going to default on its debts.
The spending has already been baked into the cake at this point: It is already voted into law. How many times must this be repeated before congressional Republicans get it?
