Oh, look: The “Gun Safety” bill deal is already falling apart, and very predictably, the fallout is going to drop hardest on Texas’s milquetoast Senator John Cornyn:
Here’s an excerpt from the story at Axios:
Behind the scenes: At Tuesday's private Senate GOP lunch, several senators questioned Cornyn about the proposal and pushed for specific details about what the legislation would entail.
Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) "very vocally" requested more information from Cornyn on the substance of the framework. Those requests were rebuffed, three sources familiar with the lunch told Axios.
The proposal to incentivize state red flag laws has been especially unpopular among conservatives. Sens. Crapo, Cruz and others have voiced their concerns to leadership about it potentially becoming too easy to strip Americans of their right to bear arms.
And Scott, the chairman of the Senate Republicans' campaign arm, feels snubbed by the bipartisan group after holding early talks with Cornyn and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.).
"No one's telling me anything. I've just asked for the text, and I haven’t gotten anything," Scott told Axios. "My whole goal is that we shouldn't be rushing something like this through; we should take our time."
Hawley told Axios he's "not a big fan of the framework as it's been announced ... I'm tracking what's been reported in the press. I understand the framework is shifting. But you know, I'm not a huge fan of it."
"I'm at a disadvantage because I'm not part of the negotiations," Hawley added. "I don't know where they are. All I know is what I read secondhand from you all."
Between the lines: Several senators feel they've been shut out of the negotiating process and kept in the dark about crucial details, and will be asked to take a politically tough vote without enough time to digest the bill.
One GOP senator, speaking to Axios on the condition of anonymity to be candid about his concerns, branded Cornyn's approach: "Shut up, and vote."
"There's considerable unhappiness in the conference that we seem to be approaching a bill that will unite all the Democrats and divide the Republicans," said another senior Republican with direct knowledge of the internal talks.
The senior Republican mentioned that Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) asked Cornyn during one lunch, "Are we focusing on gang violence and inner-city murders? And the response was, 'No, we're not focusing on that' ... And more than a few of us wondered why the hell not?"
"It would be prudent, and I think Sen. Cornyn knows this … it would be prudent to give senators plenty of time to read the bill and research the issues," Kennedy told Axios.
"We're being told that Schumer wants to vote next week," the senior Republican added. "And that the Republicans engaged in negotiations are fine with that. Even though nobody's seen bill text, nobody's seen anything more than a couple of bullet points on a one-pager."
[End]
Now, the Democrat operatives at Axios report on this in a way to blame Republicans for this atrocious deal falling apart, but the truth is that Schumer is having trouble holding his coalition together, too, and San Fran Nan is getting shelled by her radicals in the House for the bill not going far enough.
The truth about it all is this: Nobody really wants this or any other bill related to “gun safety” or “gun control” or whatever you wish to call it done, because both sides believe the periodic gun debates help them shore up their respective bases during election years.
That’s the truth, as despicable as it is.
Let’s move on…
Mayra Flores is a boss:
GOP House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy should treat Rep. Flores as his party’s most important asset for the next 5 months, as she must stand for re-election this November. The GOP should literally shower her campaign with money to ensure she is not defeated before her time in office can really begin. Gov. Greg Abbott should have an army of Texas Rangers patrolling the polling places in her district to police against the traditional South Texas Democrat voter fraud efforts.
Flores presents Republicans with the chance of a lifetime to demonstrate the party’s good faith with South Texas Hispanic voters. She can be the lynchpin of an effort to completely reverse the “demographics are destiny” mantra recited by Democrats for the last 30 years.
This is an opportunity that will only come around one time. Hell, the fact that it came around once is a near-miracle in a political sense. If GOP leaders are too stupid to recognize and grasp hold of it, then damn them all.
From our “There’s always good news if you just look for it” file:
Here’s an excerpt from that story at Townhall:
Brian Stelter could be gone soon. Spencer wrote about this earlier this month. The new brass at CNN wants to get back to hard journalism and straight news stories. They want a return to the Campbell Brown era. They want programming like NewsNight back. Brown’s show tried to do straight news. There might have been some areas of media bias during this period. Who am I kidding? It was CNN. Of course, there was bias—but it was minor league compared to what we have now. Hell, it was tee-ball compared to what we have now. I still don’t trust the top brass will make good on this promise to overhaul the news and get rid of the loud mouths, but word on the street is that the new upper-crust views Stelter as part of the old regime, the old venomous way CNN used to do the news and want him gone. They have cause to ax his show. The ratings were hot garbage (via Fox News):
CNN’s "Reliable Sources" with left-wing host Brian Stelter had its lowest-rated episode since September 2019 on Sunday when only 580,000 viewers tuned into the struggling program.
"Reliable Sources" also struggled in the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54, averaging only 73,000 viewers from the critical category. Stelter’s program shed 13% of the total audience who tuned into the show that precedes it, "Fareed Zakaria GPS," and lost 25% of Zakaria’s viewers among the demo. It was Stelter’s smallest audience since Sept. 15, 2019.
Stelter's media affairs program turned a blind eye to the jarring lack of coverage the press gave to the aborted assassination attempt of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The New York Times, ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN were all criticized by conservatives for downplaying or ignoring the alarming incident, but Stelter paid the story no heed.
[…]
Stelter and CNN colleague Jim Acosta were singled out as the "face of the network's liberal shift" in the eyes of conservatives. Recently appointed CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht previously informed staffers he would "double down on what's working well and quickly eliminate what's not," and there have since been lingering questions about what programs or personalities would be eliminated.
An Axios report cited "three sources familiar with the matter" who said Licht is evaluating if staffers can adjust to the less polemic approach, and anyone who doesn’t fall in line "could be ousted" so they don’t continue to hurt CNN’s reputation. Licht is reviewing the operations of the entire network in the early weeks of his tenure.

Glorious. Absolutely glorious.
Don’t look now, but the Biden administration is mounting yet another ‘disinformation’ policing effort, and its fearless leader will be…wait, Kamala Harris? Really?
Really:
Here’s an excerpt from that New York Post story:
Another day, another White House “disinformation” task force.
The Biden administration on Thursday created a new internet policy task force — this one led by Vice President Kamala Harris — with goals including “developing programs and policies” to protect “political figures” and journalists from “disinformation,” “abuse” and “harassment.”
The action follows the Department of Homeland Security’s disastrous April rollout of its Disinformation Governance Board, which was paused after outrage over the perceived step toward government-led internet censorship.
A presidential memorandum establishing the new task force describes a sweeping mission to protect people who seek out a role in public life from online critics.

You just cannot make this stuff up, folks. You can’t. Don’t even try.
That is all.
Once again, by way of Senator John Cornyn, the republicans may snatch defeat from the jaws of victory by helping the democrats pass this do nothing "Gun Safety" bill which would only strip lawful gun owners of their second amendment rights through "Red Flag" laws and very little else. Whether the bill passes or not the democrats will still paint republicans as uncaring about our school children and will use it as a bludgeon during the lead up to the midterms because all the have is an economy that is an unmitigated disaster.
