I’m sure this is just another scam of some sort, but Merrick Garland finally decided to put up at least some facade of impartiality at DOJ today, appointing the Delaware U.S. Attorney to become a “special counsel” to investigate Biden Crime Family money laundering.
Apparently, the refusal by the DC Federal Judge, Maryellen Norieka, to make herself a party to the sham plea deal for Hunter Biden, combined with the wide array of smoking guns unearthed by the House Oversight Committee led by James Comer, had become too much for Garland to just keep fading without at least seeming to “do something” about it.
Here’s an excerpt from a story at the Washington Examiner:
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday he appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss to serve as special counsel in the investigation into Hunter Biden after Weiss requested that he be given the authority this week.
"Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded that it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel," Garland said.
INFLATION COMPLICATES BIDEN'S PATH BACK TO THE WHITE HOUSE
Federal investigators in Delaware opened an inquiry into Biden in 2019, according to Garland, and they subpoenaed his laptop from a repair shop as part of it.
Garland noted that Weiss, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, began leading the investigation at the time based on allegations of "certain criminal conduct by, among others, Robert Hunter Biden."
"That investigation remains ongoing," the attorney general added.
In June, the investigation resulted in Weiss's office and Biden reaching a now-failed plea deal, which involved the younger Biden pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and entering into a pretrial diversion agreement to avoid a felony gun charge.
Republicans widely denounced it as a "sweetheart" plea deal, and U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika made a surprise decision last month to defer the deal out of concerns about what she observed as "unusual" provisions, including concerns that it may preclude Biden from future prosecution.
At the same time as Garland's announcement, court documents were filed on Friday that revealed federal prosecutors and attorneys for Biden had hit an "impasse" on the deal and that the case was expected to go to trial.
The appointment of Weiss as special counsel comes after criticism from Republicans in Congress that Weiss's authority in the investigation appeared limited. Their criticisms were based, at least in part, on testimony from two longtime criminal investigators with the IRS who had worked with the Department of Justice on the Biden case.
The pair testified to Congress in May that Weiss had, in fact, been blocked from bringing charges against the younger Biden in California and Washington, D.C., before reaching the plea bargain in Delaware. They also alleged that Weiss had asked for special counsel status but that he was rejected.

Now, I do think it is important to note that this Biden Crime Family scandal has been drip, drip, dripping out into the public domain and at least some of the media in the same way the Watergate scandal dripped out over the course of two years starting in mid-1972. This appointment of a “special counsel” also eerily echoes steps towards an impeachment effort against Richard Nixon that were taken well over a year after the initial story broke.
The difference between and now, though, is obvious: Then, the POTUS was a Republican detested by 98% of the national media. Now, the POTUS is a Democrat who has been protected by 98% of the national media.
Also, there is the fact that then, there were enough Republicans who had a sense of shame that enabled them to cooperate with the Democrat effort to oust Nixon. Now, good luck finding a single Democrat with any sense of conscience or shame whatsoever.
[UPDATE] In other news…
The other breaking story that led in part to the appointment of this “special counsel” broke at about the same time:
Here’s an excerpt from that story at JustTheNews.com:
By John Solomon
Federal prosecutors on Friday asked the judge in the Hunter Biden case to set aside the plea deal they had offered him because the two sides have reached "an impasse," a move that increases the legal jeopardy for President Joe Biden's son.
The request came moments after Attorney General Merrick Garland announced he was upgrading the lead prosecutor in the case, Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss, to a full special counsel and granting him greater independence in the probe of the first family's foreign business dealings.
Weiss' office asked the judge to vacate an order requiring both sides to file legal motions on how to proceed to salvage a plea deal she put on ice last month, concerned the two sides did not fully understand the consequences of the deal.
"The Court’s briefing order is premised on the idea that the parties intend to continue towards a guilty plea ... and diversion in Criminal Action," Weiss' prosecutors wrote. "But that is no longer the case. Following additional negotiations after the hearing held on July 26, 2023, the parties are at an impasse and are not in agreement on either a plea agreement or a diversion agreement.
"Therefore, the Government believes the Court’s briefing order should be vacated," they added.
The plea deal would have spared Hunter Biden prison by having him pleaded to two misdemeanor tax evasion charges and enter a diversion program for a felony gun charge. Without the deal. Hunter Biden could face additional charges and real prison time if convicted.

[UPDATE 2] - Jason Smith, Andy McCarthy Call it All Just Another Scam
Here’s an excerpt from a story at Fox News:
Rep. Jason Smith, R-Mo., is sounding the alarm on Attorney General Merrick Garland's decision to appoint a special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation. The GOP lawmaker told "America Reports" on Friday that he believes Garland's strategically appointed special counsel David Weiss is an attempt by Democrats to "whitewash" the Biden family's corruption.
REP. JASON SMITH: I think that this should be concerning to all Americans, that this is an attempt to whitewash the Biden family corruption. I mean, Mr. Weiss is the single architect over that sweetheart plea agreement deal that the judge in Delaware threw out just a few weeks ago as saying it was awful and unfair. There were provisions within that sweetheart plea deal that granted complete immunity to Hunter Biden for these crimes and future crimes. And [the judge] even stated that she's never seen anything like that before. And who was the architect of that? Now, the person who Garland, who President Biden's Justice Department, just appointed to be special counsel. I am very fearful that appointing the special counsel is just an attempt to stonewall Congress' investigation of the Biden family.

"I'm here today to announce the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel consistent with the Department of Justice regulations governing such matters. In keeping with those regulations, I have today notified the designated members of each House of Congress of the appointment," Garland said at a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Friday.
Weiss is the federal prosecutor who has investigated the business dealings of Hunter Biden and brought charges against him in Delaware. His appointment as special counsel indicates that, contrary to Hunter's defense lawyers' claims, the Justice Department investigation into President Biden's son is not over.
Garland said Tuesday that Weiss told him that "in his judgment, his investigation has reached a stage at which he should continue his work as a special counsel, and he asked to be appointed."
"Upon considering his request, as well as the extraordinary circumstances relating to this matter, I have concluded it is in the public interest to appoint him as special counsel," Garland said.

A senior Justice Department official said the White House was not informed of Garland's decision before the announcement.

Anyway, here we are - let’s see where it all goes now.
That is all.
They take nothing and build it into bullshit.
This is going to go nowhere. His office already offered a sweetheart deal as you stated. I have zero confidence this will end any other way besides the report coming out that Joe had nothing to do with anything and that was the point of the appointment.
Pray im wrong. But corruption begets corruption with the Bidens and Garland should already be impeached himself so nothing qualifies as redeeming.
