That bill nationalizing the nation’s healthcare insurance system had been passed on strict party-line votes in each house of congress, without a single Republican vote. The Dems had bet their party’s future on socialized medicine, believing that addicting millions more Americans to insurance provided by the government would accrue to their benefit in the long run.
